Evinrude 6hp converted to Briggs power head gas cap question

I have an Evinrude outboard converted to a Briggs and Stratton 6.5hp power head. The gas cap on the briggs is vented so every time I fill the tank with fuel I cannot tilt the motor up without gas spilling out of the cap. Short of using an in-boat tank setup, what are my options? Can I use a non vented gas cap exclusively or do I need some other type of vent for it along with a non vented cap? I briefly had a Honda 2hp 4 cycle outboard with a built in fuel tank like the briggs and am wondering how Honda got around the issue of fuel spillage. Thanks.

I like the throttle setup. Simple and effective.

Thanks. It is an old worn out throttle cable from a bigger boat. I had a feeling I should hang on to it, and lucky I did, it came in handy. ;)

How in the heck did you do that? Did the driveshaft fit from the evinrude? Guess it doesn’t pump water since it’s air cooled Briggs.?

I fit the briggs to the evinrude with a lovejoy style coupler that fit each shaft. I had to remove the impeller from the water pump in the lower end so it would not shoot water up and spray me and the boat.

How can I keep the fuel from spilling when I tip the engine?

maybe put a snorkel on the vent. however if you ran without a vented cap, the fuel pump wouldnt be able to draw fuel and the motor wouldnt run.

If you can make that Briggs work, you shouldn’t have any trouble coming up with a fix for the gas cap... 😳😝😝

The Briggs engine does not have a fuel pump. It is gravity fed from the tank directly to the carb.

Put a fuel pump on it and use a remote tank. Problem solved. Hey, you are going to carry a spare can of gas anyway, right?

Yes, probably. I have only test run the boat with this motor on for about 15 minutes a couple times. I don't know how fuel efficient it will be running it all day on the lake.
