...I don't have a tach yet but in comparison to the 9.2 Wizard this morning, the Evinrude does not sound like it's running at 4500 rpm. The best it would do was 4 mph. It certainly looks like the throttle mechanism is opening the carb wide open.

As ya'll suggested, it may not be running on two cylinders even though I have 7/16" spark jump with ease. I don't think I am going to spend much time messing with the 6 hp, selling it and putting the money towards another motor.

The 9.2 Wizard ran great until I sheared the pin and had to row and use my 40# MK to get back across the lake in a 18-20 mph hr crosswind. It was about 2 miles but not to bad. The Wizard ran 7 mph before the wind picked up and I think I will start looking for a 15 hp motor. Anything less and I won't be happy.

Depending on the boat, that is what I would expect

If the 9.2 hp only got you 7 mph then 4 mph seems reasonable with the 6 hp. Sounds like you could use a 20 hp or better. What is the max hp rating for the boat?

The 9.2 should be good for 18-20 mph on a typical 14 ft fishing boat.
may require some careful weight distribution and setup.6 on the same boat
with careful setup, weight etc could manage to plane and maybe do 10 or 12 mph.If your running floors, chairs, batteries live wells etc then you need some horsepower. We used to pop on plane with a flat bottom steel boat and a 5hp Gale and a tiller extension and 180lbs driver.

This is the same boat...

I really like this boat, it's perfect for my needs right now. Once my daughters get through college, I might get a bigger boat...but then again, I trailer this one from my lake to the house on my ATV.

This is the load:

Fuel tank and 3 gallons, backside of the second seat from the back - 35 lb
Lowe 1457 - 140 lb
Igloo with 20 lbs of ice, front of second seat from back - 25 lb
Five rods - 7 lb
Anchor hung from the bow - 15 lb
Oars - 10 lb
Minn-Kota 40 - 25 lb
Me - 250 lb
Motor - 55 lb
Small tool box in bow - 15 lb

Total 577 lbs

Total Load 437 lbs

BTW, the prop on the Wizard is a 5 - 5, could this be the problem with the speed?

well you've got 300 of the 437 in the stern, and the rest midship, move more weight to the bow, you are tail heavy, making it plow, instead of plane.

That boat is rated up to 15 hp. The 9.2 hp should have moved you much better even with your load distribution. However, results don't lie. Do as TD suggests and post back.

OK, what happened to the picture? The forum rules state that direct links are acceptable after March 1, 2008.

I can see it. Its a shallow hull utility. Must be something with your settings.

Six hp should move that boat faster than it is. Try to find out the prop pitch and post it here. Your motor probably has a fixed high speed jet so adjustment there prob isn't the problem. You may have some junk in it, tough. I think I would pull the carb off and take a look.

Change the weight around I have a 5 HP Suzuki that will get a 1436 Jon up to 13 MPH you might be over propped but try the weight first

Set up is huge on this type of outfit. Both the motor and the weight distribution. Motor height, trim and loading so the boat will plane out is huge. If full out the bow is up in the air then get some more weight up front.

I think we forgot the troller battery.35lbs?If the troller and battery are strong ditch the oars, how about 10lbs of ice and keep the cooler in the shade.move the gastank ahead of the front seat.(3rd seat)
Buy or make a tiller extension so you can sit on the second seat(middle seat)
Your weight by itself is close to what the companies figure for 2 people and I'm close behind.By the way what weight is the boat rated for?
Won't do much at that speed but work on the verticle height of the motor.
raise it till just before ventilation becomes a problem. be sure it pumps water.

Can you do that in Texas? That would be illegal where I am.

I looked that boat up and its rated for 15 hp.

Re: Evinrude 6hp running at 4 mph wide open...

i keep those collaspable aluminum paddles in all my boats. very light easy to store. here's the proof that load placement matters. this little boat is almost idenical, i put stick steering, and controls at the middle seat, with a 1955 15 hp rude, it would run 28 with just me, 22 with another 200 pounder.

Cant say I have seen the collapsible aluminum paddles.
TD I really like those trailer lights you have on that outfit. Each time I see that photo it reminds me what a great idea it is.
