evinrude 70hp voltage problem

Needed a new battery, 2yr old wouldn't take charge, sitting in garage over winter. Installed new battery, cleaned connections etc. This weekend on the water the volts would climb up to 16. Motor started fine, volts around 13 at idle. At low speed/slow, volts would climb to 14 - 15. At high idle or fast speed volts would climb to 16. Could smell the battery cooking. <br />1988 70hp evinrude in a Starcraft SS160

You have an "unregulated" system. The readings you are seeing ar normal.<br /><br />It's best to introduce a load from time to time. Trim, etc.

Maybe I didn't explain correctly, because I've never have the volts climb up to 16, always stay around 13.<br /> The volts climb and don't come down. About 30 seconds after starting the volts start climbing past past 14 and then stay up near 15. Then at fast speed up to 16 and when I stop and idle they fall to 15.5+/-. Is there anything I should do to save my battery.

Hello sdoyon.<br />As DJ have informed you, your system is unregulated. And with new battery, its normal to see a high voltage.<br />I had the same problem with my 60HP Evinrude from 1990. With two new battery, and at high speed, I could read up to 17 - 18 Volt DC. And at idle speed I could read 14,5 Volt.<br />So you can now do one of two things.<br /><br />1. Put on some load when voltage is getting more than 15 Volt (navigation light).<br />(this is the way Im running)<br /><br />or<br /><br />2. Change the system to regulated

I tried the lights and also radio, the volts didn't drop much. Only when I trimed the moteir did they drop down to 13 ish then climbed back up. What is reguired to make the motor regulated just the regulator/rectifier- around $130, or alot of electrical stuff?

didnt the evinrudes come with voltage regulators after a '84??<br /><br />on my '83 90 hp i have a voltage reg. do a search for "voltage reg" i also have some pictures on there of the part on my motor. <br /><br />i do have power tilt and trim<br /><br />steve
