Evinrude 78'? 65hp question

I thinking about buying a Evinrude 65hp year is questionable, the seller told me it's a 75 or 78' but it is very clean v4 compression is135psi on all cylinders and has never been used in salt water. Seller told me it has points and condensor and no pack or coils...so year is? I have not seen the motor yet but just curious on year and if parts are still available etc. He has controller with cables also and is asking $700.00 for it.
Any input would be helpful.

get the model number, usually on the transom bracket, if not there there is a silver disc, about the size of a Quarter.on the engine block, it has the model and serial number. post the # we can tell you all you need.

Not seeing the motor as of yet, is there any 70's Evinrude 65hp motors I should steer clear of.

Re: Evinrude 78'? 65hp question

Better get the year or model number rb...last 65hp with points was in 1968...plus it had a very expensive amplifier as part of the ignition system. The next 65hp to come along was in 72' but had the CD ignition system.

See if you can get the model number off the seller....that's the only way to be sure.

65HP V4? Don't think they made them after intro of the triple loopers and I think that was about 1970.

I think that is a 60s engine, pre '68, like OBJ said.

Re: Evinrude 78'? 65hp question

I'm sure no expert but my manuals seem to indicate the only year for V4 65 hp is 68 and it uses a CDI ignition with a distributor.I've heard on some V4s the distributor cap & rotor are hard to find and expensive. In my opinion the V4 is a mighty heavy 65 hp motor. You can find lots of 2 and 3 cylinder motors in the 60 to 65 hp range.
I think these motors could run circles around the V4 65 hp in mileage and performance.
I'm sure someone will be along with more info.

Your right Spike....my program only goes back to 68'....then I thought..."why not look at the model reference guide?" (Xmas revelation....DOHHHHHH!!) Pretty much bears out what ya' said. And yes....the 3cyl Loopers would run circles around the old v's.

Here's a kicker.....the distributer cap and points are no longer available from OEM.....but the rotor is...go figure.

I've gotten points from SeaWay Marine in Seattle, Washington.....you can get factory seconds (the points are off a little but still work) for bout' $33. The "good ones" cost $65. Havn't ordered the distributer cap though. Last OEM price on these bad boys was $265.:^
