Hi there i,ve just got my first boat a 16 ft fletcher and it came with an 85 evinrude electic start motor. First question is what year is it mdel no is 85852A serial no is B1519,I was told the motor runs but havent seen it working the starter motor is missing but the mtor turns over by hand easily enougth and looks to be in fairly good condition. I am a reasonable mechanic and though ive never worked on an outboard before any tips ore help with this motor would be appreciated do you think it is worth spending time and money on this ore would i be better off looking for a running engine that i can see working . thanks mick

It's a 1968 85 hp. Worth repairing? Not for me, but can't answer for you. Maybe find a used starter and see if it runs.

I don't believe I would try it on a motor this old that I didn't have any history on. You can spend a small fortune on parts [assuming that you can still get them] and still not have a dependable motor. I just believe you would be better off with a newer motor that you knew would run and bring you home. Good luck.

Thanks for the quick replys now i know the year ive managed to source a manual for the motor. As the motor actualy cost nothing ( it was thrown in with the boat) i will try to find a used starter just to see if it will run but i think ill also lookout for a newer motor as i think parts for a 68 motor are going to be hard to find in the uk. thanks for the help :) mick
