evinrude 85hp powerhead removal?

i have a 1974 evinrude 85hp outboard engine. i just bought the boat a few weeks back and it has been sitting for several years the previous owner said it was running very well when they stopped using the boat . but when i got it home rats had built there nest all around the powerhead and a couple of wires have been chewed on nothing i cant repair with a little solder and some heat shrink. but what i want to do is take the powerhead off and give it a good cleaning and maybe freshen up the paint a little . can anyone tell me what all i will need to do to remove the powerhead and what type of parts such as gaskets or seals i will need when reinstalling the P/H .also it looks like only a few bolts on dampers is all i need to loosen to take the unit off . does it just lift off after i remove these bolts? any help would be appreciated. thanks tlwilkes

I don't know anything about what you're attempting to do, but I do know the first thing the experts will recommend:<br /><br />If you don't already have one, get a manual. They can be found for sale on many sites, a few of which are kencook.com, marineengine.com theoutboardwizard.bizhosting.com, maxrules.com, and iboats.com. Although some folks use Seloc or Clymer manuals, they cover a range of engines and sometimes details are omitted. The reprints of the original OMC manuals are the most specific to your particular engine. Get one of them.<br /><br />Most manuals will give you step-by-step instructions in doing what you're doing.

Theres a topic in the archives about waking up a sleeping motor or somthing to that effect. It has alot of good info in it, and should get you goin'. I'd pull the heads and take a look at the cylinder walls as well as pistons . If it sat for several years theres quite a few things you'd want to do ie: water pump, carbs , probably fuel lines and filters, etc. I think the topic I mentioned has all the info. in it.<br /> Good -Luck,<br /> KYHunter<br /> Oh, and I forgot I have a manual that has some info on your motor . If you need any particular info. before you get your manual , let me know and I'll scan and e-mail you some pages out of the manual. That is if my scanner acts nice. sometimes it has a bad attitude. Just a little more to add to the good info you've already gotten, when you get the head off, service the t-stat housing. Much easier to do with the head off. The housing sits right below the exhaust cover....that flat plate on the back of the engine with all the bolts in it. <br /><br />I'd replace the stats and seats just for good PM. Replace the bypass valves if they look deformed.
