ok-- i just got my '79 evinrude 85hp all put back together form a partial rebuild and i'm having a start problem. when i turn the key, the starter spins like crazy but it won't move up to engage the flywheel. the first time i tried to start it, the starter moved up but didn't seem to move up enough, like the teeth were just barely mating up on the very edges. any suggestions or help would be appreciated. thanks

Have you tried a little WD40 on the shaft that the gear rides on? Sometimes it gets a little gummed up. It should move very freely by hand.

Lubricate it with light machine oil, but not too much or it will spin all over the motor.

Re: evinrude 85hp starter problem.

An the responses are going to be the same. 1) check rotation (counter-clockwise). 2) Battery condition (not just charged -- make sure you have a "good" battery). 3) Debris or burrs in the bendix or starter shaft grooves. 4) Starter brushes bad 5) starter bearings binding/worn. 6)high resistance through the solenoid. Try jumping directly to the starter. and finally, make sure all battery cable connections are clean and tight. Remove them - don't just look.
