Evinrude '87 30hp carb damage!

First let me say this forum is awesome! I only discovered it a few days ago and already it has been tons of help.

I'm working on an 1987 30hp Evinrude model # E30RCUB. I can't get the motor running. The only history I know is that it has not run in over a year. I've already checked the standard things (good spark, fresh fuel, etc). Figured cleaning the carb would be next. I found some disturbing damage inside.

First, there is a chunk of metal missing from the edge of the screw slot of the orifice plug in the float bowl. The orifice itself appears ok but I doubt I'll be able to back the orifice out with the screw slot damage...

Second, and appearing more serious, is the crack on the main nozzle (or venturi tube, whatever it's called). The tube is bent slightly out of round like it was grabbed with pliers and has a crack running almost all the way to where the tube passes into the main carb body.

So, could these be causing my no start? Can the tube be replaced? I don't think so but I'm hoping... If my carb is trashed what model years and/or HP's could I use as a replacement? Where would be a good place to look to get one? The only place I've found them is from Evinrude for about $300!! Anyway, thanks in advance for the help!

You should be able to cross reference part #'s online at show.evinrude.com with your current carb, then start picking through other years/hp's to see which ones used the same carb.
If the damaged bowl is in the same carb (Is this a single carb or double carb engine?) I'd just find a replacement carb on ebay or something. If it's a dual carb engine and it's the other carb (the one without the damaged venturi thing), the bowl can be got from BRP for like $40. I had to buy one myself for a 3cyl since I was trying to remove the high speed jet and the bowl cracked where the jet was.
As for the venturi thing, I don't know if it's replaceable or not.

Re: Evinrude '87 30hp carb damage!

I would like to re-start this thread as I have the exaxt same issue as the original post.

My outboard is an '87 Johnson 25hp 2-stroke (J25ECUA). While troublesooting a rough run condition, I observed that the main nozzle has two cracks running the full length of the tube. The tube is pressed into the upper half of the carb body and is not an individually serviced part, nor is the upper carb body available. To compound matters, the carburator is no longer available. The original part number is 039082, which was replaced with 0431884. Both are obsolete.
I have search many online marine shops and even E-bay for a replacement. So far I have found nothing.

Has anybody been down this road and may have suggestions on a fix or replacement. Can the nozzle tube be braised or a gas resistant epoxy be used? Is there a marine specific carb repair shop that can press a new nozzle in? Does anybody have either carb assembly mentioned above? Any thoughts are appreciated.

I have attached a pic so you can get an idea of the problem.

Well any of these carb numbers will fit your motor..... 0395279 replaced by 0396855 replaced by 0398082 replaced by 0431884. I would not even bother trying to fix that carb to be honest. I saw a 1985 25hp carb on ebay for 60 bucks or so that should be the carb you need but the part number he posted for the carb does not come up as any part at all on any site I checked so I wouldn't say buy it, but it could be the one you need he may have just not put the correct part number up?

I have a perfectly good 1988 25hp carb that has been sitting in my shop for over a year collecting dust #0431884 if you can't find one I may be willing to let it go if I could figure out how to sell it to you without either of us getting burned.

Brass solder it. No big problem. But do not try to remove with a screwdriver another time!

If you solder it please post pics of the results, I would like to see how you get the crack soldered that is down where it is pressed in. I wouldn't feel very confident with my carb going on a long trip somewhere if this is the cause of it not starting. But that is just me. But I may try to fix it in a pinch also :)

Re: Evinrude '87 30hp carb damage!

I wanted to follow up with everybody on what I did and found to resolve my problem. I also want to extend a huge thanks to Johny25 for his time and help!!
To make a very long story short(er), I was able to get a carb from Johny25. I rebuilt it and still had problems. I replaced both plug wires, plugs, all fuel/vacuum lines, and added a see-thru fuel filter. Still had problems ....
I started to think back about what I had did different just before the cutting out issue started. I had only changed tanks as my 3 gallon was enpty. My 6 gallon was very new and I didn't suspect any issue with it. I went back to the 3 gallon tank and all is working again. What I found was the cap vent not venting on the 6 gallon tank.
What a long painful road for such a simple problem! In the end, I had two issues. One bad plug wire and one bad gas cap. Both are replaced and I am happily out fishing again!!
