Evinrude 88 speed question

Ok I have a 1982 evinrude 88 with a 17 pitch prop on it. The boat is a 17 foot deep aluminum boat. Previousely I had a 90hp force motor with a 13 by 17 prop that would run at about 46 mph. Im wondering if this is all the I can expect out of the evinrude motor or not. The force motor that was previousely on it also had a scored piston the entire short time that it was on there and still ran faster than the evinrude. I did purchase a used tach and installed it. Now I question if it works correctly. At idle it reads about 1500rpm and as soon as I get the boat to plane 3/4 throttle the tach reads over 6000 rpm. I moved the dial on the back of the tach to 4cycle when installing and hooked it up the the grey wire that comes into my shifter box. Am I missing something here? Just trying to get up onto plane faster and a bit more speed cause it really slows down when you add another person and water in the livewell. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

46 from the Force even in ideal conditions sounds generous.Is it by gps.
A pitot speedo can be off 10% or more high or low.
if you get 40 from either with a casual setup be very happy.
The 88 is a 4 cylinder 2 cycle not a 4 cycle.I think if you change the setting your rpm will settle down.Test the 88 and get back with the prop size max rpm and speed.

I agree with steelespike. 46mph on a 17' aluminum V boat is in the 115hp+ range. I had a 88spl on my 16' Mr Pike for a short time and I was hitting 41mph with a 17 pitch prop and my boat is pretty light. My Grandpa's Lund Tyee 17.5' aluminum deep V only hits 44mph gps with a 130 Yamaha V4 on the back. I would expect no more than 40-41mph out of a 88spl on a 17' boat unless its a bare hull fishing boat with bench seats in which case it wouldn't be rated for a 90hp engine.

those 88spl's on small boats do move i had a 16" skeeter bass boat with a 89' that did well over 50 with a 21 cupped ss at 5400rpms

I'm thinking your Force was newer than 86 and the hp is prop rated vs. the 1982 being crank rated. Probably lose 20% or so hp in the translation so you 88hp is more the equivalent of a 75hp when compared to the 90hp.

On the tach, the settings are not for either 2-stroke or 4 stroke, nor are they for the number of cylinders. The settings are for the number of stator pulses (or something like that). You need to set your tach to "6" for it to work with the motor.

I run a 1980 Evinrude 115 on a 18' Starcraft aluminum. I run a 15p prop and get 40 mph.

I was under te impression the Force was never rated at the prop.
I think the prop rated difference is closer to 10% or less.Close enough to need a speedo to tell the difference.

Could be. Never have had a Force.

Thought it was more than that. But 20% may be too high as well.
