I'm new at owning boats, I've only had 1 before this and it was a 1981 12footer with a 5 hp motor.

I am kooking to buy a 12' boat with a 1991 8hp evinrude motor model # E8REIA.

The reason for the new boat is because the older one is only for 2 person and the newer one is for 3. Why, i don't know because they are exactly the same in size.

The guy that is selling it is rather old and can't remember what the mix for the gas is. He told me he thinks he just fills it up with straight gas and goes...but I can't find any info on this motor. What happens if you do put straight gas in it?

He can't find the manual for it either...I would like to find out what the mix is and if it's a two or four stroke and other important info on it like type of oil and so forth. Can anybody help me before i purchase this boat. Specs would be really greatful...THANKS!!!!

It's a 2-stroke and the mix is 50:1.

Straight gas will quickly kill that motor. You'd better hope he's not run it that way.

If it were me, and the previous owner said that, I'd be moving on to find another deal. At least consider the motor to be junk in negotiating the price.

Re: Evinrude 8hp motor questions

The boat and trailer is in excellent condition, it's very very clean and he wants 600 for boat, trailer, anchor, and oars. 200 extra for the motor. He said that he took it out once but his grand son took it out a couple of times. I looked at the gas and it looks really old. The tank is pretty rusty on the inside and it doesn't smell like fuel any more.

I'd do my best to talk him into throwing the motor in for free. If he actually ran it with plain gas it's junk.

At the very least, you need to factor in the price of doing a carb rebuild and getting a new tank and hose. Fuel pump is a possibility as well.

He wouldn't budge on the price...he says that the ever since he bought the boat he hasn't had very long run times, and the motor does look very clean on the inside and out.

If it were me, I'd pop the head and inspect the bores for any scoring immediately. A head gasket will run you about $20. If you don't find anything you'll have piece of mind. If you do find something, you'll have immediate recourse for your $200.
