So had the motor laying around the garage decided to mount it on the jon boat. I cleaned up the spark plugs cleaned up the carbs and the motor starts and runs. I put the boat in the water and the motor does not come up to speed. I did some testing and the bottom cylinder has no spark. I understand a coil failure is pretty common. I have a question I need to pull the flywheel. The nut on top needs to be removed do the 3 screws as well? Also does the flywheel need to be aligned to the exact position it was when I remove it?

The nut has to be removed.----The 3 screws need to come out for a puller to remove the flywheel !----There was a fancy washer originally to cover those 3 holes.----The flywheel key aligns it.

Thank you can I use a big puller with the side jaws to grip the outer edge of fly wheel? Thanks for info on the key I am overly cautious when dealing with things I do not know. I would order the manual but I do not intend to keep the motor.

No to the jaw puller. Harmonic balancer puller like this works fine. Replace bolts/washers w/grade 8.

right. the flywheel can't be pulled or pried. as kbait stated, it's harmonically balanced. I cringed at a youtube video of a guy who jams a big screwdriver or crowbar under the flywheel and smacks the crankshaft with a hammer to get it off. Crazy.

I have a small stack of these where somebody tried to pull against the rope sheave. Reckon they are still in balance? LOL. Worse are the ones where they pulled against the bottom edge----and bent the flywheel of pulled it off the hub.

I wouldn't run any of those with big chunks like that missing! Those come off with a bear hug pulling upwards, and a quick rap with a rubber hammer. I think that's the way the manual suggests, too.
