Evinrude 9.9/15HP Year?

Hi,
First can I say that you never realise how good these forums are until you need help. There appear to be a bunch of clever people out there.
Right, I bought a used inflatable and it came with an Evinrude engine. I was told that it was a 15HP but the leg says it's a 9.9HP. I need to know where to find the number on the engine to check the age and rating of the engine. The reason I doubt the rating is first I was told it was a 15HP, the cowling says 15HP and it appears that the lower part of the leg with the propellor attached is a different colour. This leads me to believe that the engine may be cobbled together. If this is the case, the engine may not be the original for the leg.
Will one of the clever people out there please give some direction to unravelling this mystery.

Re: Evinrude 9.9/15HP Year?

Can I just add that the reason I need the information is that I was told that it was really hard to start but once it did get started it ran really well. I though that it would be a waste to through a repairable engine away so if I can get the information I need I will have a go at repairing it. By the way it has a new fuel pump if that helps. As you can see I am no expert so will need plenty of help. Many thanks.

Welcome Warren

Look on the transom bracket for a tag with number/letters on it. Post any that you find. Failing that, look on the engine block for a round indented plug about the size of a quarter for number/letters and once again, post those and someone will help you out....

While knowing the year will definately help there is very little difference between the 9.9 & 15. Troubleshooting procedures are the same. There are a couple of extensive write-ups on these engines. Use the red search to find them.

There is an excellant wright up on 9.9/15's in the FAQ section. It's extensive and easy to read. Give it a look.

Re: Evinrude 9.9/15HP Year?

Thanks for all the advice. I suppose my main reason for wanting the exact HP is in case I need parts. But the engine has compression so in that case I need'nt bother about the exact size. I will have a look at the FAQ's section and see what I can find. By the way there is a silver circular disk or stopper with number on it if this helps in identifying the engine. They are:
B04998 and 155B64C.
Thanks for the help so far and I will be back to get more help or to update all who have helped.
Cheers.

By the way, Warren555, you might want to visually check that the choke is fully closing when you start cold.

Good luck.
