Evinrude 9.9 Electric Start Problem

I have a problem that I am hoping is not unique.... I cannot start my motor with the ignition (key) but am able to pull start easily... after the engine warms, it may or may not start with key. I have also let the motor run and then attempted to engage starter and I get about a 6 second delay and then the starter will kick in...I don't think my diagnosis would be relevant so does anyone have any thoughts? Thanks in advance!

Howdy, Keeweenaw.

You didn't say whether the starter would turn engine over or not.

If not, do you get a solenoid click?

If the starter turns engine over, but slow, try cleaning all high current connections (big wire) with special attention to where the battery ground lead bolts to the block.

Let us know more. :)

Re: Evinrude 9.9 Electric Start Problem

Thanks for the reply. I might not have made myself too clear so I will retry.

The engine WILL NOT even throw the solenoid/bendix to starter ( no click no sign of power to it) I can then easily pull start it and after idling a while I can turn the key as if to start it while running and after about six seconds or so the bendix will engage the starter into the flywheel... it then seems to take a bit longer each time I attempt this. It seems to me that it wants to build up power somewhere before it will allow the solenoid to react.

Also, after the boat is running in gear for some time, the key/starter will work fine, but only for a short period of time.

Thanks again and I hope I explained it better this time!

Is the battery up in charge? Try turning on the lights and watch their brilliance while attempting to crank. If they go out or dim badly, the battery could be low/bad, or cables are loose or dirty. If the brilliance doesn't change, check the wiring and starter switch in the control.

sure sounds like a low battery or loose/dirty cable connections.....
