Hey guys ,I'm working on a 1974 Evinrude 9.9 ,seals carburetor kit ECT,I'm having trouble getting the lower unit back in and shifting properly,I've measured the shift rod height according to the manual,I tried this multiple times,is there something I'm not doing or what, any advice would be great

The lower shift rod screws in all the way.----Then backed out so that it " leans " forward.----Line up the notch in the coupler BEFORE you put the bolt in.----Done.

Ok , so there's no height adjustment on the shift rod, screw it until it's tight and turn sonits leaning fwd,and attach coupler and it's done?

Correct ---Clearly stated ( I think ) that there is no adjustment at the lower unit.-----And what manual are you reading ?

Did you have the propeller shaft out of the lower unit?-----Some manuals belong on the little house with the 1/4 moon in the door

Forget the Clymers book, they are pretty worthless unless you run low on TP. Get a real factory service manual, well worth the cost !
