Evinrude 90 impellar, how long will it last???

Just replaced the 7 year old impellar on my EV 90 '85 model. They say after a few years of sitting around it is ready to go, worn, dried up etc. Much to my suprise the 7 year old one was perfect looking. Supple, no cracking the arms had a litte curve in them as they conformed to the water pump case. I want to rethink this. Are these impellars made of plain rubber or are they now being made of polyurethane or silicone? It just seems to me that the old one was just fine. Am I wrong or will they last alot longer than 2 seasons.<br /><br />H90

you SHOULD replace them every other year, maybe more if you used it everyday, like commercially. it should not have curves and conform. if it does, its losing it power, slowly. they are cheap. 10-15 bucks. just throw it out and be safe, or take the chance. ill buy your motor for parts after its done with that old one....

While the impellars of the past pre 1998 were good for one or two seasons of weekend use. The new space age impellars of today will last alot longer. They don't matter which way they go in and can be run in both directions without any harm beeing done! They still sould not be run dry. Old timers are just having a hard time with change.And they will still change theres every season.<br />steve

Yep Steve....us "oldtimers" will change them out everyother year. And I bet we will have less trouble with overheat to. <br /><br />Yeah...you might get away with sticking the impeller in backwards with the "fins" pointing the wrong way....but why take the chance? Put it in right the first time and remove the doubt.<br /><br />Signed.....one of the "oldtimers".

hello<br /><br /> I see this one all the time. there is NOT enogh room in the housing for the impeller blades to correct themselves if installed backwards and it will pump some water but overheat if run hard. I also throw away several nice running motors each year due to the crank splines are stuck with the drive shaft splines. if the maint would have been done the motors would still be cruising. do the freakin maint or dont say a word when your local tech smacks you with a 3 or 4 K bill for repairs to catch up on the maint. I get so sick of hearing people cry whine and mope when I tell the the piston is melted pay me 2900 for rebuilding the power head and the water pump still cost 59.95.<br /> if you will notice the price of the pump kit remained at 59.95 regardless of cyl sleeves,pistons and labor.<br /> see where I am leading. take care of you motor and it will last many many seasons. I have an old 89 140 VRO jonny/rude that I built for a crabber in 98. went past 12,000 gallons of gasoline this winter, the boat is also used for net fishing. I change the pump once a year sometimes twice. good luck and keep it cool and it will go a long long time.

Crazy, but before I knew much about impellers, I had a 28 HP Johnson that went 10 years before the warning horn started an intermittent beeping, mostly at low speed. Pulled the impeller out and it looked fine. Supple and all that. But it had taken too much "Set" to be effective. Then I learned real quick about impellers. Now on my 70' HP, it's every year or two. Food for thought...

Amen to "Oldtimers" advice.<br /><br />Replacing an impeller after it is worn out or no longer fully operational is changing it too late.<br /><br />Changing it BEFORE it begins to fail is changing it at the right time.<br /><br />I amazes me that so many folks replace perfectly good, but dirty spark plugs so often, yet will try to get a water pump to last for years.

I think it goes further than just the impeller replacement. By replacing the impeller more frequently, you'll see a lot less:<br /><br />Frozen/rusted lower unit bolts. Less PB blaster, less propane,less drilling/tapping and teeth gnashing.<br /><br />Rusted, frozen driveshaft/crankshaft splines. Same as above, plus fewer wooden wedges...<br /><br />It truly is a shame to see some of these old classics bite the dust long before their time because of neglect.

Here in Denmark where the average weather isnt as good as in Florida and a gallon of gas now costs what is comparable to 5$, a rule of thump says an outboard generally is in use 50 hrs or less a year. Most outboards are build to last around 3000 hrs or more. Why dont they run 60 - 80 years then ? Because of lack of rutine maintenance. I fellow a knew once ran a 1976 evinrude almost 20 years without replacing impeller ( it sat some years in between though ) It took drilling and grinding to get it out. In a way the same as having no insurance, or not replacing cam timing belt on a car engine. If you want to be safe better than sorry, replace it every other year.
