Can anyone tell me more about this engine please? It's a 2000 model. It claims to be as economical as a 4 stroke. Is it a Di?

Is it the good, the bad or the ugly?

Yes, khc.

The Ficht RAM system is DFI and it is about as economical as a 4 stroke.

The Ficht V6s of that period were terrible, but I believe that the V4s have been reliable.

You need more opinions than just mine.

the LARGEST problem with fichts was the servicing techs not (knowing) doing the correct service proceedures.
if that motor was/is serviced properly they are great if not i think you can guess

The Ficht word actually refers to the fuel injectors. It is a DI (direct injection) engine. The Ficht fuel injectors were solenoid based injectors and the early one were not very strong. They needed an update kit to make sure the pressure they produced would not cause any damage. They produced around 250psi. The 2000 90hp probably came from the factory with the update kit so you should be fine.

The new E-Tec is similar only in that it is also a direct injection engine; and that the engine is controlled by an all powerful EMM computer system, just as your car is. The new E-Tec injectors are far superior. They are based off voice coil technology and the fuel is injected by a magnet, much like a speaker. The EMM can change the polarity of the magnets and operate the injectors much more precisely and quietly. They inject fuel at 750psi which gives a cleaner burn due to better atomization of the fuel. They are also much stronger, just look at them. I was told by an Evinrude engineer that they can withstand 10,000psi before they start to fail. You won’t be able to find any parts on a Ficht that matches up to ones on an E-Tec.

Bottom line, don’t be afraid of the 2000 Ficht if the price is right. If you have the $$$ go for a new 90 E-Tec. If you go with the Ficht make sure you are using the Evinrude XD-50 or XD 100 oil.

ficht is actually the name of the engineering company that came up with the idea of direct injecting 2 strokes
