Hello, I need a bit of help on my Evinrude outboard 90hp. It is a 1994 model that we just got this year. We are fairly new to boating and this is our first outboard powered boat. It has been hard to start so I changed the plugs, put in NGKs and gapped them at .030 The old plugs were oil fouled but not burnt. It started great when cold with the new plugs but as the day wore on it got where it would only start when the override button was pushed and it was throttled up when starting. When it starts this way you have to be quick to pull it back to neutral then put it in gear or it will die. Is there anything that I need to check on this? I really know nothing about outboards and if it is anything very serious I would probably take it to a marine mechanic. Just wondering if there is something that I could do? Thanks

Re: Evinrude 90hp Help Needed PLEASE

If this helps anybody in the same situation, we took our boat to the mechanic today, he did a compression test first thing and found one cylinder with low compression 50psi vs 120psi for the rest of the cylinders. He then took the head off while we waited and found the low cylinder has a bad piston, scored cylinder walls. Still probably has a fuel issue as well but waiting to see about the rest of the motor....stay tuned.
