Evinrude '96 2HP won't idle. It starts up quickly but it is hard to get it to idle at the lowest speed. I have to start it with a full choke, it speeds up as the choke is lowered. I lower the gas. It gasps and stalls. I have a service manual on the way. Any ideas?
Ron

The service manual should tell ya what to do.
But in the mean time, it sounds like jetting. Make sure the connection from the carb to powerhead is tight (air leak can cause bad idle. etc.).

Can't hurt to clean out all jets (solvent and compressed air)
You want to set you slow speed mixture screw approx 1.5 turns out (the book will specify)
This adjustment only effects the idle, and has a sweet spot that when set, shouldn't have to be adjusted again.
Once your engine is running smooth, adjust idle speed accordingly.

Perhaps the idle speed on such a small motor isn't as low as you would expect. Also, make sure fuel line blockage isn't a factor. Fuel pump too!

Good luck!

lpg, I've got'98 2 1/2 hp that had symtoms simular to those of yours. I couldn't run without half choke and at least 1/4 throttle. It turned out to be old gas. I cleaned out carb and drained tank, refilled with new gas/oil and it was back to running like new. BTW, I kind of doubt that a 2 hp has a fuel pump. PDS
