Evinrude bogging down..........?

I have a 1963 evinrude 10hp outboard. I had trouble with it this year after it had set up for about three years(it would start, but bogged down and stalled unless the choke was constantly manipulated). I cleaned the carb and it starts and runs good at an idle, but when I open it up it will only rev high for a couple of second, then bog down(it keeps running, but at a low idle even though it is opened up). It will run at this low idle (about trolling speed)all day, but never runs at a WOT. I have replaced the fuel lines from the tank to the carb and all fitting are tight. If I pump the bulb while the motor is running (bogging) there is NOT a change in the engines performance. I have looked at the fuel pump and the diaphram looks like ****(all cracky and stiff). I have been told by parts dealers that I can't buy a rebuild kit for the fuel pump and a new one is ~$50. I wanted to make sure this was my problem before I invested more money into this engine. Does this sound like a fuel pump problem and/or what else could it be?

If the pump diaphragm is stiff, then it would make sense that it cannot pump gas at anything but a low flow rate. You are definitely going to have to fix that, whether replace or repair. (Did you check here for a repair kit?)

No one can guarantee you that this is THE problem or the ONLY problem with your motor bogging down, but I can tell you from your description of the diaphragm that you are going to have to replace it.

Good luck!

Thanks Glen,
What I wonder about it being the fuel pump is, all of the entries I have read about faulty fuel pumps say that if they pump their bulb, then the engine performance improves?

Just a possiblility you might not be considering:
Have you tried pumping the bulb when it's idling? If the fuel pump diaphram were leaking, it would wet foul the sparkplug of the cylinder that the pump runs off of.

Are you running with the cover on or off of the motor??
Remove the cover and try WOT again. If there's an exhaust leak into the cowling, the recirc. of the exhaust gasses can cause your symptoms.

I forgot to mention, you could bypass the fuel pump altogether and keep the carb filled by pumping the primer continously. That should 'prove' for you whether or not it it's the fuel pump.

Re: Evinrude bogging down..........?

Thanks for all of your input. I have tryed most of the suggestions given. No matter when I pump the bulb with the cowling on or off there is no change in the engines performance. I put a new fuel pump on it today and it seems to help a lot, but not totally solve the problem. With the new fuel pump the engine will rev high out of gear, but slows some when the drive is engaged. adjusting the lean/rich valves seem to help only a slightly.

Keep the ideas coming because I think somthing else is going on also

What about the float and float valve? They look to be in good condition, but I'm no expert.

Thanks again
