I have a 1975 Evinrude 25hp and am wondering if I could rig this up to make it work with minimal effort: Evinrude Controls

(I'm not necessarily interested in the switch/key aspect of it)

It really depends, because the throttle and shifter cables are usually purchased in a fixed length for the lengths you need for your boat setup. So you could use them but you will either have to use them maybe too long or possibly too short and they won't reach. So the answer is yes, but with some possible issues... As for the electrical wiring, that also depends on your abilities as well...

What type of boat are you mounting them on?

That appears to be a surface mount Binacle, not a side mount.

Yeah the cables themselves would be too long. I would want the item for the control arm itself and the connecting pieces to the engine. Theyre going in a 14ft jon boat that I've built a center console for. Good note on the mount as I had thought it was a side mount. I could make either mount work but would rather a side.

Hi Ag. Hooking up controls isn't hard and there are plenty of parts available. While no single part is all that expensive all the bits and pieces can add up by the time you get controls, cables, fittings, and helm. Here's a great link that can give you a summary of the ins and outs of hooking up controls. You may be able to compromise and hook up electric start and use a tiller extender. I use one on my 20hp and it's the best mod/accessory I've ever made. I made mine out of a couple feet of thin-walled PVC and a couple pipe clamps, but they make fancy aluminum/carbon fiber ones, if you're so inclined.

Controls for your motor are plentiful. A trip to ebay probably will bring up several. But just a couple of hints: Look for one of the square cornered ones with shaped knobs. The more rounded control with round knobs will work but the square style works much better. Both are pictured in the mentioned article (but I didn't take time to read it). Also try to find one complete with cables, even if the cables are wrong length or junk. New cables are available here at iboats at a reasonable cost, but they come without the ends. You need to use the ends off the old cables.
