Evinrude Cooling; not enough detail in manual

I did a water pump unit replacment in my '82 evinrude 55hp. The indicator/tattletale/peehole has great flow. I think the temp sensor may be bad as the alarm goes off, but the Seloc manual says check the thermostat. I cannot find anything that looks like a thermostat housing on my motor. The engine runs great, and after 5-10 min at WOT I pull of the cover and the cylinder heads are hot but not scorching/burning to the touch. I've worked on air cooled VWs and remember the old oil dipstick test...if you can hold your hands on it for a couple of seconds its okay...about 200 deg. It passes that test. Question: Does this older motor even have a thermostat? Manual is useless. I've got a Clymer coming in the mail, which will probably be as useless as the Seloc (which was actually okay for the water pump work).

Thanks for the part number so I can get another one for peace of mind. But, where the heck is it on the powerhead? The Seloc manual shows picure of "typical location" above cylinder number one. My Ev doesn't have that. Really want to replace this thermostat. Anyone know where it is on the powerhead?

Thanks much. Now looking at it after what you said, looks like not tough but not easy job. The Seloc manual stinks. My Clymers from Amazon should be in tomorrow then a I go for it...page 329.
