I have an 83 evinrude 115hp that will not trim down. It trims up fine, but the motor makes no sound when I try to trim down. Is this electrical and if so where all do I check? Can it be anything other than electrical?

Thanks

Re: evinrude down trim help

May be the relay. There is one for up and one for down under the motor cowl.Try swapping them and see if it trims down and not up.If so that is your problem.Could also be bad connection on trim switch .

Look on the starboard side(I think) in lower area of engine compartment. They're about the size of an ice cube.Probably black in color. If you can trace the wires back from the tilt motor you'll find them.

Re: evinrude down trim help

I still can't find any relays. If they look anything like car relays it doesn't have them...
When I trace the wires from the trim motor they go to what looks like a place to hook up multiple wires to the battery, not the boat motor. There is also a wire going to something(plastic switch type thing?)right above the trim motor.

123,
Do you have a black box between the heads. Mine are both in there, the black switch thing is for the tilt VS trim part of the lifting, you trim up until that switch is disengaged and then the motor goes up alot faster.

1985 90 HP Evinrude

fsds123 , here's a layout of your trim components.#109 is one of your relays. They may be located in the junction box.You can test your trim motor by connecting battery leads directly to the two wires from motor.Reversing the leads changes the motor direction. This is the function of the relays when working. 1983 Evinrude T/Tcomponents

Re: evinrude down trim help

I had the exact same problem on my 90 Hp Force last summer. I had a bad relay which caused a rolling ground, found and replaced the bad relay, and had it fixed in 10 mins.

Of course that was after I had to be towed in from the lake.

Re: evinrude down trim help

OK, there is definetly not a box with relays between the heads. Also, looking at the picture of the trim posted above, my trim doesn't seem to have any of the electrical stuff on the top 3rd of the pic. I think the trim might be a 81 if it is any different from the 83.The motor is definetly a 83. There are 3 wires coming off the trim that go to a mounting point on the boat, which the battery is also connected to.From there the wires are extremely hard to trace or get to so any more hints would be very much appreciated. Are there any trim setups that do not have relays?

Thanks

Re: evinrude down trim help

fds,If you have three wires coming from your trim motor , you may not have reversing feed relays. The 1980 model T/T motor is three lead.If you can separate these three wires and determine the two positive and one ground ,you can perform a 12v test to see if motor works in both directions.Jumper a pos and neg lead to one pos and neg and observe motor operation. Then , attach the positive jumper to the other pos lead and observe if motor operates in other direction. The 1980 T/T motor is fed through a solenoid. You'll need to locate this component and inspect wire leads and test for operation. If the solenoid checks out ,your problem is either switch or wiring related.
