:) Nice 2 page article in Boating World Magazine about the E-tec!!
Evinrude now makes it in the 200-250hp!!!
They still offer three year no scheduled dealer maintenance under normal recreational use or 300hrs. E-tec also has a salt water Edition!!!!

Also suppose to be lighter then a 4-stroke!! ;)

Fly Rod I have been reading a lot about the E-Tec as well. I am impressed with the E-Tec as well. We will see what the Japanese do to improve on the E-Tec tech knowledge when they get a hold of them.

What's different about the saltwater edition?

Re: evinrude e-tec

I will consider an E-Tec when I change boats. Why a differance between saltwater and fresh water construction? All motors should be well-built, and ready for any water IMO. If they are really good, then I could do without the oil change mess

Evinrude ETEC had a great 30 min infomercial on Sunday. I currently own two Johnsons, but if I didn't that advertisement for ETEC would have sealed the deal for me and killed any four stroke talk. Way to go Evinrude.

I may be mistaken, but I thought the E-TEC was for use in ANY water......All had the same anti-corrosion protection...maybe I'm wrong...????

I have a couple of particular fishing spots that I would hate to see an E-tec!, or any other motor and boat for that matter! :)

Yeah! That's it!... Melts the E-tec right off the boat!... So better stay away! :D

Bombardier generally considers the 20" shaft motors as "freshwater" engines and the 25" & 30" motors as "saltwater" series.

All the Evinrudes have stainless steel tilt tubes, hardware, etc. and CAN be used in both types of environments.

Thanks for the info seahorse. Are the Bomb motors as corrosion proof as OMCs used to be?

Wow, that's pretty good. Hey, are you the "seahorse" in Florida? Canaveral area?

Last year I purchased an ETEC 90 HP Saltwater edition with 20" shaft, so it is not primarily the shaft length. I believe they do use a few more SS components, a slightly different aluminum alloy, and do some additional prep work on the paint.

But you're right - any motor will work OK in salt water, if properly cared for. My last motor was a 1991 90 HP Johnson off a Bass Tracker, and I used it constantly in salt water without a problem.

Interestly enough, their 25" shaft has a different final gear ratio than the 20" shaft (2.25:1 vs 2.0:1). Not sure why...

Re: evinrude e-tec

The operative word is "generally" in a previous post about freshwater and saltwater series.

The gearcase of a 25" shaft 90 is a V-6 size with a different gear ratio. 25" shafts are "generally" used with larger boats in off-shore areas to give more thrust by swinging a larger diameter prop.

Re: evinrude e-tec

I did alot of soul serching before investing my new E-Techs. I went through the ficht delema, so far these motors are everything that was promissed. smooth, quite and extremly powerfull. I run 2-250's on a 28 foot hydra-sport that is 7500lb with fuel. My boat has never ran better. I only have 10 or so hours on them and have not pushed the past 5000. rpm. I am doing 39 mph @ 4000rpm @ 9.6 gph. this is way better than the old ficht motors. I hope they hold up.Ps if yuopu do get an e-tech ( get the Commander Guages) depth sounder built into the speedo. fuel system montoring built into the tach. does more stuff that i ahve figured out yet.

Re: evinrude e-tec

I believe both engines are basically the same, one is white and looks prettier on Saltwater boats and says they words "saltwater edition" to make the guys in saltwater feel better, just about marketing.

Not sure if it is still the same, but OMC engines had a SS steering arm and the regular one did not.

Re: evinrude e-tec

salt water edition motors usually have 2 or 3 more stainless parts than the regulars guys do, such as tiltubes, seering arms, hood latches, toothbrushes, etc etc etc, i think
