Hi folks,
I just got my first boat with an older electric shift 85 HP Evinrude outboard. I have never owned an outboard with electric shift and was wondering how dependable these are. Any common problems with them or do they work fairly well? Anything to keep an eye on, etc...

Thanks,
Nick

I have a 1972 hydro electric shift and it's dependable, Just make sure you change the l/u oil every year. I think it's type "C" oil. Not the regular gear oil.

The only type of oil you should ever put in your lower unit. Check with your dealer if you can't find it anywhere else.
It is for electric shift lower units.

Re: Evinrude electric shift

Nick.... Your engine is a 1972 85hp Evinrude which has a "Hydro Electric Shift" setup. When one simply states "Electric Shift", that pertains to the older style straight electric shift models.

The "Type C" lubricant is also known a "Premium Blend" should a Evinrude or Johnson dealership have that in stock. These lubes are a thinner blend needed to function properly with the oil pumps.

The thicker "HIVis" lubricant that the mechanical shift models use will cause the electric shift or hydro electric shift units to malfunction.

Re: Evinrude electric shift

Thanks for all the info. This electric unit is different from what I am used to and my first for all the boat motors I have owned over the years. I did notice when I unscrewed the drain plug to see if any water would run out of the lower unit it was dark and of a different consistency than my other gear cases. I have manuals on CD that go way back and I saw this has a hydraulic pump for pressure to assist in changing the gears with solenoids. It is pretty odd sitting in this boat and having push buttons to change gears. Reminds me of my first car which was a 64 Dart with it's slide park lever and push button panel to change gears. As long as it works everything will be fine. We just got this boat a few weeks ago and when I saw push buttons on the control I knew it was an older electric shift although I have never owned one or operated one before.

The power head was nearly locked up so we got one coming off of ebay that is supposed to be good. After I get that on and a new water pump repair kit hopefully it will function like it should. This is going to be a fun boat and the motor was real clean however as they say show don't make it go and in the case this is true. We knew it may have a problem and the price was right so it's ok. I'll get it going here in a week or so and then I'll get it out in the water and see how this thing works. The person we got it from said it shifted ok but you know how that goes. Anyway thanks again for the info on this...

Nick
