Re: Evinrude etec vs 4stroke for break in

"Break in" "seats" the piston rings to the cylinder bore for both 2 stroke and 4 stroke.

Ok i get what you say,but how come you hear don't breakin a motor with synthetic because the oil is to slippery? You know how many times i have heard that. But yet a evinrude etec has that, that is so contradicting in todays world.

As others have said, BRP "controls" the "break in oil" period via the ECU. Rings will eventually seat with synthetic oil, they will just take longer. I suspect that Evinrudes run a longer break in period (more oil) that "typical" 2 strokes.

Ok you make your point jim.The manual says use fcw or api/sae certified, that's all.So hell everyone should start breaking in with synthetic if it doesn't matter.Yes it may take a little longer as Theoldwizard1 said, but heck you can't get better protection then synthetic oil.Like i said before i have never once broke in any of my 5 engines and they ran like a rapped ape so to me the manual is just a precaution measure. The chances of me getting lucky 5times is 0.I never said not for people to follow it but to me it's a precautionary thing and no more. That is my opinion.I have never once heard of a motor failing due to not following what they recommend(Again read the manual,it says their recommendation)That means you can follow what they say or do it your own way.At least that is what all my manuals said.My new manual say this is the recommended breakin, that's it.It does not say follow it or do it your way,it says recommended breakin, which means there is no right or wrong way,it's up to the user.

They say "recommended" because if they said "you are demanded to do it this way under penalty of law", it would scare customers away. I think Funk and Wagnals explains recc. very well.

Sooooo.... all these motors you ran like an ape - do you still have them? Don't say you don't because if you don't you don't know what the longevity of them really is.

Alls I know is that I have seen an engine that was broken in as recommended and is still running strong 30 years later with absolutely no parts replaced - ever. OTOH I saw another that had the snot run out of it for 8 hours straight and it was doa.

You have sufficient replies to explain the wheres and whyfores - do as you please and please report back in 10 years.

Re: Evinrude etec vs 4stroke for break in

I know were 4 of the motors i sold are today and the other i lost contact with the guy but it was over 6yrs old and running as good as day one. They run like an rapped ape still to this day and all 4 have perfect compression. The other 1 i have no idea were it is now.I sold 4 tohatsu's that i ran out of the box as all of them like a rapped ape and none of the 4 have had any issues but basic maintenance, that's it.As a matter of fact the first one i sold in 2001 was a 9.8hp 2stroke tohatsu and it was the best motor power to weight ratio i have ever seen besides the 15hp 2stroke merc i sold a while back and it runs just as strong as it did in 2001,hmmm i believe that's 13yrs ago.Not 1 second of breakin on that motor or any other,15min of letting it run from the box and 6000rpm strong every trip there after.I never said it was correct that's just how i did it.Outboards are made to run hard not baby them and go 3500rpms like a car.You won't hurt any outboards running wot for any extended time. Most people run them at lower rpms to save on gas or they feel more comfortable doing so and that's there choice to do as they want. The saying is run it like you stole it,why because you won't hurt a darn thing. There made to tear the water up,i want to get to my spots asap and not let people beat me there or on a rainy stormy day haul a@# home.I don't have time to go 5mph from spot to spot, open that throttle up from the beginning, you want to baby your motor there is no shame or wrong in that,do as you please like you tell me but the truth is you won't hurt it giving it some pedal to the metal from the first hr on.I don't know a lot about certain things on outboards but i do know i have never,i mean never heard of a motor failure due to not following the manual. It's going to break whether you go wot or go 2500rpms,there was something wrong with it to begin with if that happens, probably had a defect from the manufacture. It happens from time to time, going all out wot or going slow won't change that. It's a machine.
