HI Guys,
Looking at buying an Evinrude Fastwin, 15hp, I think, , for $100. Can any one tell me the year of this motor, or any info you know about it. The serial number off the plate is # 15034-03761.

Thanks

Re: Evinrude Fastwin

That's a 1961 18hp. It's a lot better supported (more parts available, etc) than the earlier 15hp. If it's got good, even compression (<10% difference) and the lower unit fluid looks good, that sounds like a pretty good deal. The 18hp was a pretty popular engine '57-late 70s in one form or another. In the later years they tweaked 20hp and then 25hp out of the basic design.

recheck model # can find. if it's a fastwin, has compression, and good spark, for $100 jump on it. i paid $300 for a 55 15hp fastwin, and had to buy a tank.

Re: Evinrude Fastwin

I rechecked the model # and it is indeed a 1961 18 HP. I'm going over today to pick it up. I've seen a few comments about the gas tank. Does this motor require a special tank? Is this a pressurized fuel system or similar to my Merc with single gas line and vented tank?

Thanks

EE

Re: Evinrude Fastwin

when you get there look at the gas connection. if it just gas the gas inlet, and the clip pin, it is a single line. if it has the gas inlet and air inlet, plus the clip pin then of need the old pressurized tank with two lines. if it is the one line get a metal tank and a evinrude/johnson hose. i've had a lot of trouble with the plastic tanks, and after maarket hoses, like walmart sells. if you need a pressure tanks there are some still around.

I'm pretty sure 61 was the first year for the single hose system on the 18.We had a 61 18 when I was a kid.It will have a 2 pin connector on the motor a pointed latch pin and a gas supply "pin".

FYI - last year for the pressure/2-line system across the board was 1959. 1960 models were all fuel pump driven (with the exception of the 3hp which had gravity feed system...)
- Scott

Hey

Thanks for the replys and info. Picked up the motor for $100 - baby looks sweet! Don't know when it was last run, but soon as I replace the impeller, I'll fire it up.

Does this motor have a thermostat or tell tale outlet?

Ernie

Being a '61, it ought to have a thermostat. It's located under a plate in the cylinder head (where the spark plugs go), which is held on by three screws.

The water exits through the hole on the back of the midsection. It won't be much until the thermostat opens.
