Hi,

I have a 1974 Evinrude Fisherman 6hp .So I did a cylinder drop test. Seems like one cylinder (top) is not firing. In the mean time I pulled off the cylinder block. I did this because I noticed when I pull out the bottom spark plug a lot of water cane out. When I pulled the cylinder block out. The gasket needs to be replaced. However, now I don’t know what do next. What else should I check for to fix the 1 cylinder not firing and the water coming out of the spark plug peep hole.

More trouble with this motor ??-----Try doing the compression test as mentioned to you before.------Blown head gasket is my guess from 1000 miles away.

better start squirting some WD-40 ASAP to flush out all the water and after a good warm up in the sun or air blow job spray some storage oil to protect all wetted parts … then fix the head gasket and the ignition issue after

As you have it apart, get a head gasket for it: http://ww2.iboats.com/Cylinder-And-...222585--session_id.816300104--view_id.1546028 . Resurface the head with some wet/dry sandpaper on a hard surface -- look for equal shine all around.

....have you tried new plugs?

You should PM a Mod and ask that they combine this thread with your original.
That way the people that you are asking to help you with this can see the whole story.
That works best in here.

New plugs was the fix a while back but now there is a new issue with the motor

Here's the update. Removed the head. The gasket is no good, which answers for water coming out of the spark plug hole. I will be replacing that. Since I have the motor somewhat apart at this point. Just thought I do a spark test to make sure I'm getting spark on both plugs (Which I am). I resurfaced the head yesterday. Can someone tell me why the gasket might have blown? I could assume just old and never replaced. Maybe overheating? The water pump seems to pump water pretty well.

I believe the replacement gaskets are better quality with metal rings.-----They must have known about the issue !!----This was mentioned in post # 5 about a week ago.

So after putting in the gasket and put back the head, spark plugs, etc.... Should I do another compression test? i

What if I don't get good results from the test. What else should I check for?

Also, what about doing another drop test? if that fails what else should I look for?

I just want to cover all ends.

Never hurts to do a compression tests, especially if you don't get good results. Let's wait to see if you do get poor results before we go into long winded suggestions on what to do next.

Obviously you will want to fire up the motor to verify it works. Again, it never hurts to do a cylinder drop test to be sure both are firing OK, especially when they were not before.

Let us know how it all turns out.

Here’s the update.

Put it new head gasket. Using the one with the metal rings. Bought the aftermarket Sierra part number 18-2961 gasket not the OMC. Fired up the engine. Did a Drop test After engine was warm enough and on high idle. Both cylinders are kicking!!!!!! Checked for water leaks around the head and thermostat area and there were none. To be honest the engine sounds completely different and seems stronger. Will be doing a water test tomorrow morning. Will post updates.

All good, sounds like. Retorque the head bolts after running a bit. Good luck with it -- good boating!

Ok, so I retorque the head bolts. Took it out today. The engine is running as it should be. Rpms are high and planes right out the hole shot. To be honest the engine has never ran this way ever since I bought it from the last owner. Topped out at 16 mph, which is awesome! I appreciate everyone’s help and advice.
