Hi

Based on me being able to get the Evinrude in question serviced and running I'd like to make it look nicer from the outside and to maintain it!

What's the best way of repainting an outboard?

I am gonna follow this thread. I, too, am curious about repainting an old sea king. Fiberglass housing, aluminum (?) housing.
Rattle can colors?

Same way you would paint anything else? :)
You didn't say if you were doing a restoration paint job or not. To do it as a restoration you would disassemble the motor and repaint everything, including the engine block.
If you're just doing the outside, degrease, sand, mask, prime and paint. You can do the fiberglass hood, but find the replacement decals first, if they exist.
Try this store for decals: http://stores.ebay.com/Nanas-Decals
I've never used them, so I can't vouch for the quality.
The paint can be found at nymarine.ca , or an auto paint guy can match it.

Unless you're running in saltwater or keeping the motor in the water, paint really isn't a maintenance issue; it's a cosmetic one. A 6 hp kept in the garage isn't going to ever rust or corrode, particularly since it's aluminum and stainless steel for the most part.

Ya, you can paint something or you can repaint it, the latter being very time consuming.

To piant just wipe off the grease and scuff ti up a little and hit it with a spray bomb.

To repaint you need to remove all the loose paint, dissasemble the motor mount, pull zerk fittings ect.

I have done both, painted it twice and last year I stripped it down and started over, the engine will die with the last job on it, took @9-12 hours to strip it, 2 hours to paint and another 4-6 to reassemble and remount btu it will last the rest of the engines life.

I tis best to pull it from the boat, I hung mine from ther rafters in the garageto paint it and attached ti to a saw horse to strip.

I used a paint scraper and heat gun to get the loose paint off then just scuffed the paint that was still stuck to the engine, don't like chemical strippers as they leave a residue.
