Thanks for your encouragement to be patient and use heat - had another go at it today and it started to move - this is on my 1968 6hp Fisherman where I am trying to get the bottom part of the lower unit off to get to the impeller - it moved down about 1/4 inch and wiggles around a bit but does not want to seem to come down more than that - Should it not come down about 2-3 inches so I can get to that bolt inside to allow it to drop down completely? Is there something else which I need to remove or, is it likely it is corroded onto something inside and just needs a bit more 'persuasion' - I sprayed a bunch of PB blaster inside via the small gap - maybe that will loosen it up - it looks as though the gear shift lever is moving around as I wiggle the bottom part around.

Try shifting it into reverse and see if it woun't drop down far enough the disconnect the shift linkage.
Remember that the driveshaft will have to be rotated to align the roll pin in the driveshaft to completely remove the lower unit.
