A word of thanks to those who gave advice information regarding the 6hp Evinrude fisherman I was working on. I eventually got a new impeller from NAPA and just cleaned up all the other parts really well. I bought a new 1 inch roll pin for the top of the drive shaft and cut it down to 3/4 inch - I got new bolts for the lower unit and for the water pump housing - the water pump went back together easy - getting the lower unit back up into place and getting that nut back on the clamp was a bear - took me ages but evenually managed to wriggle it all back together. Fired it up on the small boat I have on the pond - nice flow of water from upper exhaust and ran nice - a little smokey at lower rpm - maybe have the oil mix a bit rich. I took the cover off the thermostat housing and found the thermostat really corroded in there - took it out and soaked it in clr and cleaned it really well with wire brush - tested in hot water and it worked. Put back together and seems fine.

NOW - I hauled my other project out of the barn - it is a 7.5 hp Fleetwin - in really nice shape. I want to replace the impeller for this as well - of course I got the lower unit down a way but could not see how it could come off - now I see I have to remove the power head - are the bolts which hold this on fairly obvious? I want to check the thermostat on this one too in case it is suffering from the same problem - only thing is that i do not see an obvious location for this on this model - does it actually have one? is it under that cover on the side of the engine?

Thank you,

There are no thermostats on the Fleetwin. Removing the powerhead and undoing the shift rod is all you need to do on the top end.
