Evinrude fisherman newbie question

Hi
new to the forum - my father in law has a 6hp Evinrude Fisherman serial number 6802C E07094. Engine runs well but the shaft which runs from the throttle twist grip down to the first elbow has corroded and seized up inside the housing - when he went to twist the throttle the part which has a screw clamp inside the throttle twist grip completely broke apart.
Is there a source where I can get a replacement for this? I think I can remove the old one and clean the housing out but need a new shaft (also need to know what the correct term for this is) -
Thank you
Lee

Welcome to the iboats.com forum. The experts here, which I am not, can help you with any question about your boat, motor and trailer. Your model number indicates you have a 1968 motor. BRP still maintains parts diagrams for that year and newer motors. See the link below.

The shaft you described is listed in the Lower Unit Group as "Gear and Shaft Assembly, Long" with a price of $64.97 and looks to be still available. Good luck with that great old motor!

Sounds like you need #75. Gear & Shaft. This is from a '66 but I believe they're the same.

If your gear is still good I have made several of these by going to the local hardware store and buying a plain length of round stock, use a grinder to make the flat, cut to correct length mark drill holes for pins, tap out old pins with a punch, put old gears on new rod tap pins in drilled holes re-install. It really is easy after you have done a cpl. if you want the (real thing) ebay often has them...good luck.

Thank you for your advice - I am going to take it down to my garage and take it apart to see what condition the pins are in - looks to be a lot of salt water corrosion in there.
