I think so , The one member said 40-45 ft lbs . I also found a little water in the lower unit to today . I drained the oil and found about a teaspoon amount of it in there.I was wondering if on the plugs for the lower unit is there to be plastic washer on the screws for the drain and fill . I found none .

Re: Evinrude Fleetwin throttle handle problems

Problem solved . It had a metal part placed in backwards I turned that part around that holds the throttle handle and all is well now . Someone that owned the motor before me had taken the tiller handle apart and not reassembled it the right way . Me not knowing this thought it wasright at first . But after I had problems with the gears slipping and the throttle handle being to tight . It was trial and error on fixing it . So if the next person has a problem with there old evinride fleetwin or fisherman motor that has a tight tiller handle . Look at the metal part that hold sthe spring it to see it its placed it there right . That being placed in there wrong will cause you problems and can be fix very easy too . watch and take some pictures if you can . If you place that metal part in backwards it will be tight on the handle and will cause the tiller throttle to slip on you .

Re: Evinrude Fleetwin throttle handle problems

Hi guys .

I just bought a evinrude fleetwin That I think is about 1957 or so . The guy told me it wont stay running but I changed the gas and it runs . So the throttle handle dont seem right to me . Its too tight and the gears are not in the right place too . I seen some parts on ebay and am interested in buying the parts that are needed . I may also want to find a good marine mechanic that wont rip me off just fix it . maybe tune up the motor also . I only paid a 125.00 from a guy in milwaukee , WI . I was wondering if I take it to a evinrude dealer will he charge too much or want to work on it at all . So what can I do to fix the throtttle handle . Please help me out . I want to go fishing soon .

The throttle handle is spring loaded, with a pretty heavy duty spring. If you undo the screw holding the handle on it will pop off with considerable force. I think the spring is there to create friction and keep the throttle speed steady when you let go of the handle.
If you don't mind not having that feature, reassemble the handle without the spring, it's a lot easier to put back together that way and my bet is you will find everything turns as smooth as as could be. I haven't run my engine with the spring out yet, and I have a hunch it might slow down when the handle is let go, but hey, it's a deadman's throttle control for free!
