I got all the bolts out.. the shifter rod is disconected.. why won't this thing just slide down.. I got one bolt in and once I loosen it the gear case slides about 1/8" and stops.. it wiggles just doesn't want to come the rest of the way. Can anyone help? Am I missing somthing??

No sealant.----Do not turn shift rod during your work.----Better yet check shift rod height before re-assembly !

Yes. I actually measured height, I have to replace the shift rod o-ring.. I measured the height before I unscrewed the rode in order to remove the housing and slid the housing off the rod to access the o-ring. There was gear oil dripping down the back of the gear case on hot days.. and coming from the shift rod, now that I see the brass bushing the o-ring is basicly gone.

But one thing.. should there be a backer nut on the end of the rod? As a stop? Or just rod threaded into the bottom no nut?

The o-ring is easy to replace without removing the bushing.-----The rod just screws into the gearcase.----No backer nut of any kind.

Okay thanks.. just ordered parts, gonna have to buy a o-ring puller to get it out. Didn't plan on removing bushing. Seams easy enough
