Evinrude holes worn in lower Crankcase head assembly

I have a 1995 Evinrude 115hp (E115TLEOR) I am rebuilding. The lower crankcase head and seal assembly has several half-moon shaped holes on the upper half of the assembly near the shaft. It looks like something has worn on it or maybe the bearing overheated. Is this normal and can I reuse this part or will I have to get another one? I have looked this part up (0434793) and it is no longer available and I could not find one on EBAY. They have a few on EBAY that looks like the part but I am unable to verify it will fit my motor.

Thanks

Interesting question. I can't imagine what half moon shaped holes you are seeing or what might be in there to cause any wear. Of course there are the holes for the bearing retainer plate screws, but it sounds like you are talking about something else. How about a picture?

Took my 1996 88 apart for a rebuild and found the same thing, only one hole though. Going to replace the head and seal. I haven't started looking for new one yet. I'll let you know what I find. I'll try pics later.

A picture would be great. I think I know what you're talking about but not quite sure. The head may have been manufactured that way.

It looks machined...maybe a drain??

Not a 'wear' but has been manufactured that way for some reason. providing the holes are below the crank shaft seals, no problem to re-use as it has been that way all the time.

It was a manufacturing screw up but it will still work. Just go ahead and use it. How long has it been working since new?? Hummmm?

Hi Dougpatt,
I have the 115 spl 1998 and its the same.
They are correct, I actually think they are there so facilitate easy removal of the seal (I know it certainly made it easier for me to remove the seal!), Put it back no worries but replace the seal.
BTW my post is HERE, I've just rebuilt mine and am currently running it in.
