evinrude hp information

i have a 1964 model evinrude outboard can't find any numbers on engine found this number on inside of to cover: bt-204918 and underneath that this date: 2/24/64 not sure what hp rating engine is and can't get engine to fire. someone help please

Hi Ford, Look on the transom clamp for a plate. We need the model#.

there it was big as life model# 40453r serial# e04643 i know nothing about boats first one ive owned. having problems with it firing removed flywheel and on the coil (i guess thats what it is) one of the two black boxes is melted. wiring going to starter solenoid is a birds nest also wondering if a wire from coil has to be hooked to 12v power. also engine cover has big twin emblem on it if that helps

EDIT: I overlooked post #3.<br />Hooking up a wire from the battery to the coil is precisely what melted it. On that engine there shalt not be any connection between the 12v starting system and the ignition system!<br />The ignition system is completely independent from the starting and (if you have it) generating system, ie the battery. The only ignition wiring should be the two wires that originate from the armature plate (where the two coils are mounted). When these two black wires are connected together, it kills the spark, and stops the motor. When they're apart, the engine is supposed to run. When you connect one of these wires to battery +, it melts it's respective ignition coil.
