Evinrude Idle Problems

I have a 1995 Evinrude Ocean Pro 225. I just decarbed with Sea Foam and changed my plugs, however I still am having idle problems. The engine is cutting off sporatically at idle. When slow trolling at idle it will sometimes spit and cut off also. It always cranks right back up and if I go ahead and put it into gear and give it a little gas it runs fine. Takes the gas great at all RPMs. Any help would be appreciated.

Re: Evinrude Idle Problems

I'm guessing you have a partially restricted low speed fixed jet issue with the carbies and or the carbs are in need of a link and synchronization procedure. Are you using the recommended Champion sparkplugs?

I am using the recommended Champion plugs at the correct gap. What is the partially restricted low speed fixed jet issue with the carbies and or the carbs are in need of a link and synchronization procedure? Can you elaborate?

I recommend that you get the OMC service & parts manual for your motor if you don't have them already. The service manual will give you the sync & link procedure. You can get the manual here:

http://www.theoutboardwizard.bizhosting.com/parts_service_and_owners_manuals.html

I had a simular problem with both of my OMC V4s. It turned out that a wrench had removed the t-stats and the motors never got up to operating temp.

Re: Evinrude Idle Problems

The link and synch procedure is a critical adjustment of the timing of the carbureator flaps opening in relation to one another and the ignition curves. If they open a bit late, early,or unevenly, at initial throttle up under load ,you will experience the sluggish symptom that you describe.Problem is ,is that several things could also cause a similar condition. For example: one or more partially restricted (gummed or fouled)carburetor fixed orifices that meter fuel. Also ,out of adjustment idle mix screws (if applicable) can result in the same condition.

If you are going to perform these critical steps yourself,You will most definately need the specifics from an engine specific manual.
