Evinrude ignition trouble

I have an '82 Evinrude 35 that has a puzzling and regular engine miss. At low speeds both cylinders seem to drop ignition (?) at about ten second intervals, this interval decreases to about 5 seconds at full throttle ... has anyone got any suggestions of where to start tracking this problem?
Thanks

Could be running lean. Does that motor have adjustable carbs. May be time for a carb overhaul.

Re: Evinrude ignition trouble

My 35 has a single carb, plugs don't look like a lean run but will overhaul anyway as it is probably well overdue for this. You might be right as the miss opens out to a 12 second interval when the mixture screw is opened 1/2 a turn. Thanks for the advice

(Carburetor Adjustment - Single S/S Adjustable Needle Valve)
(J. Reeves)

Initial setting is: Slow speed = seat gently, then open 1-1/2 turns.

Start engine and set the rpms to where it just stays running. In segments of 1/8 turns, start to turn the S/S needle valve in. Wait a few seconds for the engine to respond. As you turn the valve in, the rpms will increase. Lower the rpms again to where the engine will just stay running.

Eventually you'll hit the point where the engine wants to die out or it will spit back (sounds like a mild backfire). At that point, back out the valve 1/4 turn. Within that 1/4 turn, you'll find the smoothest slow speed setting.

When you have finished the above adjustment, you will have no reason to move them again unless the carburetor fouls/gums up from sitting, in which case you would be required to remove, clean, and rebuild the carburetor anyway.

Re: Evinrude ignition trouble

Thanks Joe, I am working without a manual so your help is much appreciated. It's a fine day here so I'll get the boat to the water and commence with resetting the carb now that I have it cleaned out and with new gaskets/ seals.
