hi all i am compleatly new to this but am excited for a new project
any information you can give me about my motor would be very helpfull. it has been sitting in my garage for the past four years since my moms ex boyfriend left it there. I really would like to figure out the year and get a manual for it. not sure if it runs i am taking the boat to work tomarrow where i can get a little help and a better look at it.
thank you in advance.

It's a 1958 Evinrude 35hp. 24:1 ratio (some will debate this though), tcw-3 oil, points at .020" and plugs at .030".

Read the 'awakening a sleeping outboard' thread at the top of this forum. Most would put a new impeller in it. (water pump).

The first biggest thing to do in my opinion is to make sure it turns over and to check the compression. If you have good compression then they're usually worth fixing up.

And welcome to the forum. You'll find good resources here.

It is a 1958 Lark. People complain about it, but the Seloc Manual #1300 sold here at iboats really isn't bad. In my humble opinion, it gives more information and tips about a lot of stuff than the factory manual does.

Wow. Someone actually supporting the Selocs! :) I also am a supporter. They're a good starter/general info book. I have many engines and cant afford 1 manual per engine. Mind you, I don't look at them anymore! I just look at the occasional pdf parts diagram to see what's where before I open something up.

Re: Evinrude lark 35 hp @ 4500

thank you very much I found one bill of sale and a lot of other paper work for the boat as well. the bill of sale says its a 1957 evinrude 35hp lark but it could be wrong. the boat is a 1961 kenway 15 ft fiberglass v hule. I took it to work today and the motor started third pull. the ignition was not hooked up so i had to pull start it. hooked up the ignition and its starts first try every try!!!! it has compression test numbers on the motor and was tested in 2000. i think that was the last time it was run. good compression. it must have had some kind of stor in it. there was a lot of smoke. it got better as it ran but it still puts out a lot of smoke. i ran it in a trash can full of water with a hose. i tried with help to adjust the low and high speed. seems to run real good other than exhaust smoke. i could only really run it in neutral because it was in a trash can but it did shift smooth into forward and reverse.
i didn't change the plugs they looked good.

so here are my questions
do i need to add lead or do anything to the gas i use due to ethanol?
will it smoke less once i run it on the water and not just in neutral in a trash can?
should I get the Seloc Manual #1300 or is there a manual more specific worth getting

thank you again

In those days, people used to go out of their way to find unleaded gas. now it's everywhere. Be glad.

Smoke is normal. Once you get it out of that trash can it will be much better. Also, you can't adjust it properly in a can so once adjusted that will help too. But as I said, it is supposed to smoke.

Check with www.outboardbooks.com for a factory manual if you feel you need one. But I'm telling you that the factory books were written for the dealer's shop. The dealer's service people are supposed to know something about what they are doing. The Seloc contains a lot of basic information for the novice that you won't find in the factory manual.
