A friend of mine just gave me a Evinrude Lighttwin Model 3302S Serial B 18010. From what I can gather, I believe this is a 1963 model. This is the same type of motor my grandfather had and brings back my earliest memories of boat motors.

This motor has been sitting for years with old gas in the tank. Just for the heack of it, I tried to fire it up and it did show some life sputtering a bit. I assume I will have to drain the tank, clean the carburetor and probably replace the impeller and ignition. I am not much of a mechanic but I think this may be easy enough for me to take on.

I see that there is a tuneup kit for $107.50 and I think I will go ahead and order it unless someone has a better idea. The only other thing is I will probably have to replace the pull rope and handle.

One thing I noticed when I went to start it is that there is gas dripping out of the carburetor. I hope this is a gasket problem that will be taken care of with the tuneup.

Any thoughts or suggestions you guys could offer would be greatly appreciated. Do any of you have any experience working on this motor? Can someone point me to a specific service manual for this motor? I know there are several but I would like a recommendation.

The fuel leaking from the carb would be from a leaking needle & seat. Can you tell us what all is included in that tune up kit? On a engine that age You will want coils, points, plugs and condensers. That will cover the ignition system. A carb kit will have the needle & seat, float, gaskets, and needle packing. You will want a water pump kit, and lower gear oil. You should be able to get all of this for $107.50 if bought seperately. You should have a great running little engne when done. Also check the fuel filter that screws into the fuel tank, it's just above the fuel shut-off valve. A compression test would be a good idea before you start

Exactly what R.Johnson said! But I would pop the flywheel off before ordering parts to ensure you still have the old, wrecked igntion coils before ordering new ones. The engine may have already been serviced for that. You can beat the $107.50 tune up kit by about $25 or more by shopping around, but make sure you get the carb kit from either maxrules.com, or your local Johnny/Rude dealer. The aftermarket kit is missing an important part.
You need a puller that acts on the three bolt holes in the flywheel to remove it. Search this forum for 'harmonic balancer' for details.

These are reprints of the factory service manual, and they're the best:
TheOutboardWizard
Mastertech
Marine Engine
Ken Cook
Iboats sells the aftermarket Seloc one, which covers your engine is pretty well. But the factory manuals are superior. Sometimes you see them on Ebay, but I don't see any now. (Search '3hp manual', '"3 hp" manual' and 'lightwin manual')

When you have the head off, ensure that all the cooling passages are open. To the waterjacket around the cylinders are two passages that frequently clog. One drain at the lower left side, and one supply dead center above the top cylinder as deep in as the 'pipe' that's cast across the top of the block.

Good luck, and tell us what you find! And run that compression test like R.Johnson said!

PS -
Evinrude model 3302:
Year: 1963
HP: 3
WOT RPMS: 4000
Displacement: 5.28 cu.in. = 86.5 ccm
Weight: 34 lbs. = 15.4 Kg
Gear ratio: 17:28
Spark Plugs: Champion J6C gapped at .030" (J6J is no longer available)
Lower unit oil: OMC/BRP 'HiVis' or equivelant 80/90W outboard gearcase oil from Walmart, etc.
Fuel/Oil mix: 24:1 87 octane gas to TC-W3 outboard oil (forget about SAE 30w).
Picture

From the Old OMC Site

I have been buying manuals from a company that has them on CDrom. I have one for Johnson which covers just about all the older motors and I just got a master manual for Martin outboards. They are about $15.00 from www.frontier-trading.com

Thanks for all the good information. You guys give me a lot more courage because I know where to go for help. I'll keep you posted on how it goes. I plan to start working on this just after Christmas Break.
