i have been trying to make this engine run. It set for some time before I got my hands on it. I took carb off, it had stuff stuck in it so I cleaned it. The fuel tank is no good, it looks like it has 20 year old fuel in it, haha. I took it off, and I don't know if it would work, but I put a longer fuel line, going up and attached a little bowl of fuel, acting as fuel tank. Anyways, it would not start, or even hit, even after shooting little starter ffluid right in the cylinders. I finally took the pull starter off and used a drll on the crank nut, and after checking the plugs for spark, ithey were and putting gas in the cylinder it hit, it would pull itsself when the drill kept it spinning, other wise it would not run, it would hit till the fuel was burned. So my question is, the fuel thing i did with bowl, is that okay for now, can I use a fuel hose ran down to ground in a fuel can? and why can't I make this run at all. What should I do to try o make it run? What things do I check. also what is oil/fuel ratio? thanks for your help

While you're doing that, post a model number of the motor you're working on, so we'll know what we're up against.:D

Really, everything to know is here: http://forums.iboats.com/showthread.php?t=299680

I'd check the compression first; for that motor over 50 lbs and even across the two cylinder and it will run.

Then check the spark on both cylinders, using an adjustable spark tester. You want it to jump at least 1/4" with a nice blue spark. The spark tester is about 5 or 6 bucks at an auto parts store.

If you have spark and compression, then that leaves the fuel system. Using the tube and clean bowl method will work. A model 3012 is from 1952-54, and will use at least a 20:1 mix. It originally called for a 16:1 mix. The carb needs to be spotlessly clean inside, so it's best to soak it in cleaner and blow out all of the passages with compressed air.
The fuel tank can be cleaned by sloshing around some steel nuts in there with some carb cleaner to knock all of the gunk out. You may need a magnet to get the nuts back out.

The sintered metal fuel filter that is screwed into the fuel tank is a bit more problematic. Take it out and clean it the best that you can by soaking it, brushing it, blowing it out, etc.
