Evinrude making noise

Last time out as the engine was at 4500RPM, I heard a pop. Right afterwards I heard clicking coming from the engine. I was about 5 miles from shore with no cell phone signal, so I decided to reduce the RPM's and hope to get close enough to obtain a signal and call for a tow. After about 1 mile, the clicking got louder and then finally I was stranded. The enigine would run, but I had no forward or reverse when I put it in gear. Naturally the clicking also went away. Does anyone know what type of damage I may have caused and what I can expect to pay?

ZekeL: You will get better answers if you will give year, model and horsepower of your motor. Welcome to forum, BTW.

It is an Evinrude 70HP. I am not sure about the year but I think it is an '86.

Hello.
Sorry to hear about your mishap.
Drop your lower unit and check to see if you can turn the prop by turning the drive shaft clockwise, after you put it in gear.
Then check your drive shaft for signs of damage and dependent on whether the damage is on the top end or the bottom end you will have to either repair the lower unit or drop the exhaust housing and repair whatever damage there is in your engine.
If you see no sign of damage, and your lower unit seems to do what it is supposed to do,then your trouble is defenitely in the area between the crank shaft and the drive shaft.
good luck.
