I bought an older evinrude last year and was told I have a 1978 140 horse evinrude. When I went to buy new ignition coils for a 1978 they were the wrong ones, but the 1977 ignition coils were the correct ones. Could someone clarify the correct model aand year that I have. Mod# 140843C ser# J0001381.I am not sure about the 8 in the serial # since there is a light scuff mark there. It may be a 3 or 6. thank you

gcman49
Your model is a 1978, a 1977 is a 140740, 14043, and 140783. Doesn't mean a '77 powerhead may have been exhanged, or the '78 mid section swap for a
'77,or some kind of ignition swap at some point.
Backfire ;)

Re: evinrude model and year

Thanks for the help. I figured it was like some of the older cars I bought that swapped parts mid year. I'll just have to keep an eye on replacement parts I buy. Thanx again
