Bradster - do you mean the seal between the the plate and the pump? The o-ring is there and the gasket is on tight.

I asked this before on iboats but I got a mixed bag of answers. Is a 1977 70 hp out board suppose to have a hole 1/3 way up the water tube? The hole is small. I have been told its there to help cool the exhaust or something. Is it possible this is killing my pressure with the rabbit ears on , not allowing flow?

I had a 1989 15HP Yamaha. I could never get it to pump water on the ears. It would always pump in the barrel and in the water. I ran it for 5 years with no problems. I thought maybe the ears were no good. I now own a 2004 50HP Johnson and it pumps water on the same ears. <br /><br />I never did figure out why the Yamaha wouldn't work on the ears.<br /><br />Jason

Also if you are concerned about the pressure. You could always add a water pressure guage to your motor. You can get a kit for around $50 more or less depending on which one you choose. It includes everything you need to set it up. It will dispaly your pressure while you are driving the boat. Just keep an eye on it. There are some for sale here on iboats. That is half of it, the plate, after all it has two sides to it. Did you use Perfect Seal on the lower side of the metal plate, (paper gasket), during install? Air is 25 times less dense than water and as such, will always flow quicker and with greater volume.

Bradster,<br />I used a some gasket "stuff" on the paper gasket but I didnt put any on the lower side of the plate because it wasnt any on the last pump.I will try it!<br />I am still trying to figure out the hole on the fill tube , is it suppose to be there?

My quess is there should be no hole in your water tube, with a thermostat and a pressure releif valve in the motor it should be a pressurized system, but thats just IMO.

Im gonna drop the lower unit and put a rubber hose over the hole to seal it and see if that cures the problem.If so ill patch it up.
