I am replacing the outboard on my 24' 1997 Hydra Sport with something brand new...at least 250 HP. The family debate...Evinrude or Yamaha?? 2 Stroke or 4 stroke? What do you think??

Re: Evinrude or Yamaha

I would love to test them both out. Supposedly the Evinrude has less emissions, is more fuel efficient, is lighter, and accelerates faster. I'd like to see that verified though. It seem that if it were true that people would be all over the Evinrude. However, I haven't seen the excitement to be there - at least not yet anyway.

you need to compare apples to apples here. The evinrude is 2 stroke and lighter, it all depends on what you want.

people in mass are very gullable and easily convinced.

" 4 stroke" is the "new" "IN" thing in outboards now. 2 stroke is decades old.

BUT......

anybody with a true mechanical aptitude and a hold on what things are and what really makes things work in and on and around boats.... why would you want MORE weight, MORE moving parts, MORE maintenence.

for all of the features that yamaha and all other 4 stroke outboard makers use as their claim over 2 strokes, you can get all of them and more in a new direct injection 2 stroke such as tohatsu or evinrude.

BUT, in addition to a quiter motor, no smoke, smoother operation, better fuel effieciency.... you get all this and MORE with a direct injection 2 stroke such as a tohatsu or an evinrude . you get less moving parts and you get less weight.

if you want to explore something, go explore the new(er) merc verado.

its a 4 stroke( so what, its supercharged)
they get awfull gas milage and are WAYYYYYY heavier than anything else out there and have WAYYYYYY more moving parts than anything else out there. honestly, seriously, to an outboard boater, what advantage do they have other than the WOW factor? if you own one, email me, im seriously curious.

mike

MOB, The Verado may be heavier than many motors, I dont have one but from feedback that I have had the Verado has amazing torque and excellent fuel economy, Where does your awfull gas milage statement come from?

Buy the Evinrude. We need people to test these new technology machines, so that all the bugs are out when I decide to buy one! :p

Re: Evinrude or Yamaha

Too bad the poll's dead. I vote Yamaha 4 stroke. Father has one (it's only a 150 however). He loves it. Outstanding fuel mileage, silent, rock-solid.

As for BRP's E-tec...the closest I can get to that is my snowmobile, a Ski-Doo 600 SDI 2 stroke motor. ALSO gets outstanding fuel mileage and the weight savings are certainly nice. I fully acknowledge that we're not comparing apples to apples, but the technology is similar. My Doo has been great, others I know of have had some plug fouling and oil consumption issues. They just seem much less consistent in terms of reliability.

In my gut I just feel the E-tec technology may not yet quite perfected and they'll be more prone to have future problems. Yamaha 4 strokes are pretty well established and running great. And 100% oil loss systems polute. Even the ones that use less oil and have less emissions. They're still spitting that oil out somewhere...into the air and water. Common sense says that a 4 stroke will spit less oil outta the exhaust than even a clean E-tec 2 stroke. So the 2 stroke thing still bothers me a bit from an environmental perspective. Another thought...4 strokes generally have longer lives than 2 strokes. 4 strokes lubricate better with their pressurized oil systems. So 2 strokes simply have more ring and cylinder wear and more combustion stresses than a 4 stroke. But both will realistically last longer than you will own the boat itself, so this may not be a big issue.

not in my boat, never!

ive run other peoples boats with them and ive seen others run by me and ran around with, but as for actuall ownership. sorry, not in my boat buddy!!!!

ive run 4 stroke 4 runners and 2 stroke 4 runners, both of the 300(ish) engine size, i think one was a 300 and one was a 330...hmmm... but guess which one kick soo much more azz than the other, it wasnt the 4 stroke.

i say this from actual ownership and runnership. im not just going by the ad's these companies spit out at me.

i currently have 7 boats, and 13 outboards. the only 4 stroke outboard i have is a 1999 mariner 9.9. i also have a 1988 2 stroke 9.9 evinrude, and it COMPLETELY RUNS CIRCLES around the mariner. plus its about 30 pounds lighter.

as i said before, people in mass are very gullable. i do all my own work, im the owner and operater of MYOUTBOARDS outboard repair, and i will never own a 4 stroke outboard on my own boat. i have the 9.9 mariner just cause it was from a friend. its no big deal, however a 500 or 600 pound v6 on my boat is way different. never

these are all just my opinions, im not telling youi or anybody what to buy or use, im just giving up some information that ive acumulated over the years.

i still stick by the thought that a new 4 stroke doesnt offer anything a new direct injection 2 stroke cant!

That's a misconception: the oil is burnt in the combustion chamber. Afterall, would the EPA really give an award to an outboard that dumped raw oil in the water?
If you don't belive me, you can look up the CARB emissions data for yourself. It's all on their web-site.
As for 4-stroke outliving 2-strokes, I don't know where you find this. Honestly, I don't even know how you could compare the two. It's hardly a fair comparison, but it seems to me that outboards last just as long (in engine hours), if not longer than I/Os.
I don't mean to start a war here, but I think Sandy deserves correct information.

Re: Evinrude or Yamaha

Honda and Yamaha own the new outboard market.
Hmmmm, i wonder why....considering they make an overweight, underperforming, high maintenace
product. Ha!

I don't think so

Re: Evinrude or Yamaha

The largest outboard company's in terms of number of units sold(worldwide) are:
Yamaha
Tohatsu
Mercury
Evinrude
Honda
Suzuki

Honda really is not a big player in the market. As for Yamaha, they make a lot more two-strokes than four-strokes. They both make great four-stroke outboards that are perceived as being "the best". They also require more maintenance, are overweight pigs and lack hole shot(compared to two-strokes). But, people who own them, like them...And that is the most important thing. People should buy what they are comfortable with. If you want a E-tec, great. If you want a Yamaha, great. No one makes a bad outboard.

Re: Evinrude or Yamaha

Phatmanmike, I think that differant people like differant outboards and nothing you can do or say will change their view. You are obviously happy with your choice of 2 stroke motors on your fleet and good luck to you.
You could ask the question, why would you buy a Ferrari when a Ford would have more passanger room, have better towing capabilities and use less fuel. Or why would you buy a Harley when a Honda is lighter and would outperform the Harley.
No one outboard motor will ever be suitable for all applications or appeal to all customers.

Re: Evinrude or Yamaha

Two strokes kick *** PERIOD! However, 4 strokes do last longer. In ATV's and motorcycles, two strokes get rebuilt on a regular basis, while four strokes just don't unless the get real old. In motor cycles and ATV's two strokes are far faster and stronger in the same cubic inch class. I have a 350cc Polaris two stroke and a 300 cc Honda four stroke. The two stoke blows it away! You can't even compare the two! This is one of the reasons ATV's have been getting bigger and bigger in cc size, simply because two strokes are not being made much anymore and four strokes are dogs unless they are of a much larger size.

However in the end, the Honda sips gas, while the Polaris guzzles it with a nice blue smoke trail that follows it!
