i just bought a boat (1970 larson 18') and the motor it came with is apparently a early to late 60's 80 horse evinrude. it has the electric shift and it appears to be a short shaft.

when i bought it, (it runs well) apparently the lower unit was messed, i took it out and took it to a boat shop and apparently its just worth getting a new one because of the damage, my question is, what kind of lower units are interchangeable with this motor because ive seen lots on ebay and such but nothing specific to mine. any help would be great guys...if it helps the model number is 80792R

the electric shift lower units are hard to come by in good working condition. What did they say is wrong with it? I am surprised a shop would even look at it. A lot of the guys around here take the lower units off and put jet units on.

well i heard you lose about 15% or more HP when you use a jet and i didnt really wanna do that. I actully ended up tracking down a unit but a long shaft (mine is short) so i swapped the shafts around and it works great. cost me about 395 for the lower unit :( but i went boating all day yesterday and had a great time so its worth it

Locate the year and model number of your motor and go to http://epc.brp.com/ and cross reference the models and years above and below yours. If you find your motor part number under other models and years, it will fit.

I'm a dedicated jet user ... I think it's more like 30%. A very large difference. If you need an outboard jet, they're great (I really need one - shallow rivers). There is no way I'd use one if I didn't need one. Inboard - I/O jets are a different story. The merc sport jet is pretty efficient and a very nice rig in a lot of applications.

I'm glad you were able to solve the problem without a huge cash outlay!

It's funny how quickly you forget about engine problems once you get it running and on the water.

Re: evinrude outboard questions

You've probably already figured it out but I think your engine is either a 1966 or 67 Speedifour. I didn't cross reference your model number but I've got an 80 horse Rude and I think those were the only years they made an 80. I have 1976 AMF Crestliner Muskie and it came with a 1967 80Hp Evinrude. Here is a picture of my first (and so far only) time out on the lake with it. What type of damage did you have to the LU?

The electric shifts on V-4 OMC outboards are all alike, whatever the year or horsepower. Long/short drive shafts are easy to swap.

BUT, now that I said that, I have to say "except". The 100hp is much larger and obvious at a glance. Also, the ones with the exhaust exiting through the propeller are different. They are "Hydro-Electric", a different critter entirely.
