I have owned this 1970 evinrude 85h starflite for over 23 years ..no problems. Then a few years back I blew a power pak then another. I have read over all like questions and have the right battery, checked all wires, my question, is there any type of protection switch I can install to protect from a re-occurance?

There is a thread about voltage spikes on www.screamandfly.com. It is for different engine, but might apply here. Some Ford vehicles have a diode in starter solenoid to prevent voltage spikes from killing the computer. Solenoid your engine almost same as Ford, grounded different.
