Here is the 1975 'Rude dude engine block I scored from an OMC/BRP dealer and marine salvage company in the south San Francisco bay area, near the Sacramento river delta. At $125.00 including shipping, it was a deal I could not pass up. It was a fresh water only engine whose life was cut short when the owner destroyed the lower unit by hitting a rock in the river! I was thrilled to see the hone marks, and look at the head; you will so those wedge shaped affairs near the spark plug holes that keep the incoming charge from "quenching" the spark plugs, and fouling them out when trolling. This was an update that was incorperated in 1977 models and later. I have also found "synching" the spark plugs helps too: orient the ground electrode towards the intake ports when you torque the plugs, the tip of the ground electrode will then face the exhaust ports. This then allows the ground electrode to shield the tip of the plug from raw fuel mist and prevent fouling and gives great low speed trolling. I use a felt tip Sharpie pen to mark the plug so I can see where to stop tightening it such that it is aligned as described above, and repeat for the other plug. Sometimes, you need to swap plugs to get them to line up at the right point when tightening, it's a trial and error thing. I share this with you because it has really helped my fishing, as I troll alot. This synch trick came to me via 2-stroke motorcycle and Go Kart racers who I hang out with.... it works.

Now me gots a Johnnyrude.

No pics:confused: Ive also heard of orienting the plug on 2 strokes . I use to drag race snowmobiles on ice and some of the guys would "index" their plugs too. I never knew if it helped because it was idle to wide open .

Woops! Pictures would help, huh? Thanks, indexing is a better term isn't it? :)

Notice the 8 bolt thermostat cover, and unpainted head. This is the retro fit kit that was a factory update some dealers installed on the 15 engines, Leroy mentions it on his site. I was lucky this engine had it fitted. It is beacuse of this that it idles so well, and I also have the updated brown Delrin ring under the magneto stator which takes out the slop and reduces low speed timing fluctuatuions. I made a "best offer", they wanted $250.00, but took my offer as nobody had bid on it. Funny thing is, they shipped me an alcohol 2 burner marine stove by misstake, which I refused, then the engine came, and the next day the stove showed up again...Fed-X got it all screwed up.

It is always nice when things work out better than expected. I wonder what I will find when I get around to my 1976 15?
