don't run it too long without thermostat and you'll be fine. but when you hook up the water hose be sure and only do one thing at a time. meaning, if you don't have the lower unit bolted up you are bypassing the water pump, if you also remove the thermostat at the same time you will not know definitively what is the problem. do the pump bypass, problem still exists then remove therm. problem still exists then it's time to start unbolting stuff to see inside motor.
