I recently purchased a boat from a friend and he said it had engine troubles. I pulled the cover off and noticed both head gaskets had been leaking possibly salt water. Tried to turn the crank with ratchet but would not move. I pulled the plugs and several of them were rusty mainly the 3 left cylinders of a 1985 V6 Evinrude 150 XP. I pulled the right head and the top cylinder had a little surface rust on the cylinder. The other two are fine. And as I was attempting to pull the left side cylinder head I noticed it had possibly overheated on that side because it melted a wire plastic covering. I pulled the Left head and noticed all three cylinders were fairly rusted inside. As I was pulling both heads I noticed that the bolts were not torqued very tightly. My friend that I bought the boat from said the motor had been rebuilt. At that point I'm thinking that whoever rebuilt the engine may have forgotten to torque the head bolts to spec. That's why both left and right side head gaskets were leaking. After cleaning the cylinders and spraying WD40 in the cylinders I tried turning the engine over with a ratchet. No movement. My question is could the rings have rusted to the cylinder walls and stopping the engine from turning. Cylinders have no scarring or pitting With the left 3 cylinders overheating could the engine be seized up? Is there anyway to free the pistons so I could replace the heads? This engine has been sitting 1 year possibly with the water in the cylinders even though they were dry when I took the heads off. Is there any product better than WD40 to spray in the cylinders to free up the engine a product like deep creep? Please help! Any information would be helpful. Is this motor history?

What is pb blaster and where do you buy it. Someone told me to try tapping the pistons with a block of wood. I hope this works. If I can get any movement I know I could possibly work it back and forth until I could clear the cylinders. What damage could have been done to the rings? Thanks

After the last dollar bill left your hand!

Seriously, it depends on how bad you want it running. You have no sentimental value in it. DEFINITELY no performance value. Get a divorce and move on.

That motor has ingested salt water and is junk, to put it bluntly. Save your energy. Rebuilt, my hind leg.

Stik Guitar,

If you're determined to move the pistons and see how bad the damage is, try this. It could take awhile.

As already mentioned, keep the cylinders soaked with penetrating oil. Every day. You probably aren't going to move the pistons with a socket- you need to try and break them loose. Get a wooden dowel big enough so it just fits through the spark plug holes. Seat it on the top of each piston and give it a couple of real hard blows with a hammer. If it doesn't move, soak it again and leave it for another 24 hours. Repat daily. Sooner or later you're gonna knock it loose. If you keep trying to turn it with the bolt head, sooner or later you'll shear the bolt.

If you are so danged determined to get the pistons loose, first take off whatever you can to look into the crankcase. You will probably get sick.
