evinrude selectric push button control wiring

would anyone be able to help me, i have a 65 hp evinrude about a 1972
with the selectric push button, someone mixed the wires up on the switch
it has three wires on the bottom and two on top not sure which wire goes
where, the switch had netural in the middle of the switch.

If you look at the bottom of the switch and hold it so the arrangement of the terminals forms a capital "L", Blue is in the middle and connects to the reverse solenoid. Green connects to the right tab and controls the neutral solenoid. Purple/ green stripe attaches to top tab and supplies power. Don't know what you mean when you refer to the two wires on top. Do you mean inside the switch?

There are two solenoids in the transmission. When neither solenoid is energized the transmission defaufts to forward gear. For neutral the neutral solenoid must be energized. For reverse both the neutral solenoid and the reverse solenoid must be energized. With this information you should be able to repair your switch even if it has been messed with inside. You must use type "C" fluid in the transmission. Do not use gear oil or motor oil. It will probably not shift correctly if you do. Good luck.
